MIME Type Reference

Look up MIME types by file extension and vice versa — a searchable table of 62 common content types.

Type an extension like .png or a MIME type like application/json and get the match instantly. Covers documents, images, audio, video, fonts, archives, and feeds. Essential when setting Content-Type headers, configuring servers, or debugging downloads that open as garbled text.

How to use this calculator

  1. Type a file extension (with or without the dot), a MIME type, or a kind like video into the search box.
  2. Scan the table for the extension, MIME type, and category.
  3. Copy the exact MIME string into your server config or Content-Type header.
  4. Clear the search to browse all 62 entries.

Worked example

Searching .png returns image/png (Image). Searching video lists all 6 video types, from video/mp4 to video/x-matroska — each with its exact header-ready string.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a MIME type?

A MIME type (media type) is a label like text/html or image/png that tells software what kind of data it is receiving. Web servers send it in the Content-Type response header, and browsers use it to decide whether to render a page, display an image, play a video, or download a file. Email attachments use the same system, which is why it is called Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions.

Why does my browser download a file instead of displaying it?

Almost always a wrong or missing Content-Type header. If a server serves an SVG as application/octet-stream instead of image/svg+xml, the browser treats it as an unknown binary and downloads it. The fix is server-side: configure the correct MIME type for the extension. This reference gives you the exact string to put in your server or framework configuration.

Should JavaScript use text/javascript or application/javascript?

Use text/javascript. It was standardized as the official JavaScript MIME type by RFC 9239 in 2022, and HTML now requires it for script elements. application/javascript is the older, now-obsolete label — you will still see it in legacy configs, but new code should use text/javascript. Browsers accept both, so old setups keep working.

What is application/octet-stream?

It is the generic fallback for arbitrary binary data — literally a stream of 8-bit bytes with no further meaning attached. Servers use it when they do not know (or do not declare) a file's real type, and browsers respond by downloading rather than rendering. If you see it where a specific type belongs, look up the right entry in this table and configure it.

Do I need the leading dot when searching?

No. The search strips a leading dot automatically, so .png and png return the same result. You can also search by full or partial MIME type (application/json), by kind (video lists all six video types), or leave the box empty to browse the full table of 62 entries.
